The Dick Was Half Right

Dick Durbin was partially right. There IS torture at Gitmo:

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Two Afghans released from Guantanamo Bay claimed Wednesday about 180 Afghans at the U.S. detention facility were on a hunger strike to protest alleged mistreatment and to push for freedom.
Habir Russol and Moheb Ullah Borekzai, who said they left the prison camp on Cuba on Monday and were flown to Afghanistan before being freed, said they did not participate in the hunger strike. They did not say how they knew others were refusing to eat.

The problem is, of course, that the terrorists have figured out a way to torture themselves.

No one ever said that terrorists were all that bright to begin with.

Now, if we could just convince the rest of Jihadi Nation to starve themselves for Allah, we could end this war right quick, and turn our attention to the important things.

Like the Paris Hilton/Nicole Ritchie feud.

It's even more irritating to find that the comment is 10 paragraphs long, and the person leaving it doesn't have a blog of their own.

Granted, once the comments on a post reach a reasonable number, it's expected that they'll drift off-topic. But please, have some common courtesy for at least a little while. Is that too much to ask?

Bear in mind that I can edit your comment, on any post, to make you say what I want you to say. You may find yourself agreeing with things you didn't think you would.

So here's where I get stuck, and could genuinely use some help.
It looks to me like Iraq did make an attempt - at least a desultory one - to buy uranium.
That's what they were accused of.
Wilson, in his original oped, slams the Administration because

In September 2002, however, Niger re-emerged. The British government published a ''white paper'' asserting that Saddam Hussein and his unconventional arms posed an immediate danger. As evidence, the report cited Iraq's attempts to purchase uranium from an African country.
Then, in January, President Bush, citing the British dossier, repeated the charges about Iraqi efforts to buy uranium from Africa.
The next day, I reminded a friend at the State Department of my trip and suggested that if the president had been referring to Niger, then his conclusion was not borne out by the facts as I understood them.
So I'm puzzled...it seems that the facts as he knew them supported the claim that Iraq was trying to buy uranium.
So help me understand this gap. Too many smart people don't see it as a gap for me to just assume there is one.

2 Wilson either lied or he disregarded facts. An inquiry by the British into the intelligence indicating Saddam did try to purchase uranium yellowcake in Niger and Congo found the intelligence accurate. What you had with Wilson was an anti-war CIA agent recommending her anti-war husband to go to Niger to prove this intelligence was not accurate. Also in Wilson's editorial, he did not say Saddam was not seeking yellocake, he only said he could not find the link. The press though ran this as a Bush lie despite the fact Bush said British intelligence learned of Saddam's attempted purchase. It is all symantics really, but it is nonetheless crucial to understand.

Their greatest "victory" of the past five years has been the outing of Jeff Gannon/Guckert, a gay porn star/escort, or whatever, who, turned journalist, (how appropriate, I thought, but nonethelsess a downgrade), decided to throw out an easy question at a White House press conference, for which he was excoriated in the leftard bogosphere and hounded in the press. They fish for whales, and claim victory whenever they catch a minnow. Plame and Wilson are already being revealed for the frauds, liars, and political hacks they are, so I say bring it on. 4 It was pointed out on a news show the other night (sorry, I don't remember the show or commentator) that these prosecutions usually end up charging someone with obstructing justice due to misstatements during the investigation itself. Rarely is someone actually charged with the original crime. What if Fitzgerald charges Wilson? Just imagine the glorious Dem/MSM hissyfit.

Under normal non-war conditions the fact that most of the public can be completely mislead by the presentation of facts that, in themselves, are well-known and clear, implies a level of ignorance and deliberate deception that's not good. If the nation is at war the situation suggests the possibility of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, or something equally ignoble. Now you say that Wilson claimed he found no evidence to suggest that Iraq was interested in yellow-cake, when from his debrief it appears that he did find such evidence. This isn't a semantic issue. During the Civil War the Copperheads were on the verge of winning when Sherman took Atlanta. It's simply far too easy for me to imagine a scenario where our innate selfishness gives the modern Copperheads enough leverage to win a vital election. The irony is that they nearly did just that in 2004 were it not for a few historically Copperhead counties in Ohio that voted the right way. No, I'm not at all confident that they're paying the price they ought to pay. There's a lot of wishful thinking out there. It'd be a bad idea to assume we're on a roll yet, although I cautiously think there's some truth in what you say. By the way, there's a pro-war Left too, you know. What bothers me most about this whole special prosecutor investigation is that, two years later, he hasn't yet bothered to answer what should have been the very first question asked: was there any crime committed? Increasingly, it appears that there was not. I think Wilson, like Clarke, was working under the assumption that he could get away with saying whatever he wanted because the documents which showed the facts were classified. So both of them concocted stories calculated to make them important figures and put them in line for jobs in the coming Kerry administration. Then along came those 9/11 Commission hearings, and some of those documents got de-classified, and what they were saying publicly was at odds with what the real records showed. Wilson told the CIA the former prime minister told him Saddam was trying to buy Uranium. He then publicly announced the opposite in his op-ed. There's the only gap.

What Forces Abdullah to Murder People?

British Islamic leaders Wednesday called for a judicial inquiry into what motivated the bombers.
"The scale of disenchantment amongst Muslim youth is very clear to see," said Inayat Bungalwala of the Muslim Council of Britain.
"Various factors are at play: underachievement in education; a high rate of unemployment; discrimination in the workplace; social exclusion, and also the government's own policies, especially in Iraq. The process of how we get four homegrown suicide bombers must be understood and that is why we are calling for an inquiry."

That's a good question Mr. Bungalwala. Almost all of the factors you mentioned have been cited as problems for several American minorities, most notably blacks and hispanics. Oddly, however, we Yanks haven't developed any black or hispanic "homegrown" suicide bombers.

Hmmm...what could account for this discrepancy? Could it be...oh, I don't know....ISLAM?

Seriously, Mr. Bungalwala, if you want to be seen as contributing to the solution, rather than exacerbating the problem, you need to encourage your fellow Muslims to actively expose the monsters hiding within your community.

Why is it that the only time the "moderates" say anything about these extremists is after the fact? No, it was kill, plunder, rape, pillage, and do whatever to the non-Muslim. Islam was spread throughout the world by violence, and every Muslim implicitly understands this. That is why they are not encouraging the jihadis to stop. Do Christians and Jews have the same rights as Muslims in Islamic nations? Weren't we all created equal? It seems that Muslims think they are more equal than others. That is why it was not a crime in the Caliphate these people so want to reintroduce to kill, rape, steal, enslave and otherwise plunder anyone who was not a Muslim. Until the "moderates" remake Islam itself, this religion will continue to produce people who continue in the vein of jihadism.

8 And here in the UK, where one would assume Hindus and Sikhs would be subject to similar prejudices as (allegedly) are Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs overwhelmingly tend to do pretty well for themselves. Why? Because they make sure they do. They study hard, they work hard, and above all, they don't have a victim complex. They don't insulate themselves from everyone else - sure, they retain their own culture, but not at the expense of being friends with people from other cultures. Assimilation has become a dirty word, but a degree of assimilation is necessary to get anywhere in life, no matter where we're from or where we're going.

Let's speak plainly; they're just spoiled brat rich kids with no desire to work for a living and too much time on their hands. Like Osama. Like Western liberals. Hmmm, liberals seem to love Osama, could it be that it's simply that they identify with him? Hindus and Sikhs, on the other hand, generally don't spoil their kids the way most muslims do, and have a much, much, MUCH better work ethic. I do know some Pakistani muslims who work hard and don't give their kids expensive toys, but I think they are in the minority. It all comes down to a lethal mix of too much time, too much money, and too much islam.

UK Setting Up Global Extremists List

The UK plans to establish a global extremist database. The database would list "unacceptable behaviors" like radical preaching, websites and writing articles intended to foment terrorism. British Home Secretary Charles Clarke also plans to expand the definition of 'direct incitement' to include 'indirect incitement to terrorism.' The new definition "targets those who, while not directly inciting, glorify and condone terrorist acts knowing full well that the effect on their listeners will be to encourage them to turn to terrorism." Getting listed could mean expulsion from the UK [correction: expulsion isn't an option yet] or being denied entry into the UK:

BBCÂ—The UK is to set up a global database of extremists who face automatic vetting before being allowed in, Home Secretary Charles Clarke has told MPs.
He said the database would list "unacceptable behaviour" such as radical preaching, websites and writing articles intended to foment terrorism.
Individuals' presence on the list means they may face exclusion from the UK.
Hopes for an international conference on Islamic extremism were also outlined by Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Mr Clarke told MPs he wanted to apply more widely the home secretary's powers to exclude an individual from the UK if their presence is deemed "not conducive to the public interest". [. . .].

1 I'd like to see the US set up such a list (or at least in conjunction with the UK) for just such a purpose. However, the lefty "internationalists" in our country will apply the free speech amendment to fight it, even if our constitution doesn't protect those who are not citizens. They'll waste more of our time and resources in doing it too, because that is what they do - obstruct for the sake of obstructionism. There's been too much precedence pointing to the probability that that's exactly what will happen.

3 IM: I have a good freind whos' father worked in Saudi Arabia for many years for a big oul company. I asked one time why he would go all he way over there to work. Two reasons. One you make really good money. The other was that the Saudi men just don't work hard like Americans. They did have a couple of good hands from Saudi bu mainly they would either now show up or not make enough trips ( trip is when you wear out the bit and have to pull out and add a new one) or they would all just stop working and let 10,000 barrels of oil spill all over the desert. From what he said over there the women do all the work and the men do as little as possible.

A few more notes on Mr. Doohan. He was a WWII D-Day vet with the Canadian army. He took six rounds loosing a finger and was saved by a silver cigarette case when one hit him in the chest. So not only did he play tough he was. He was born on march 3rd 1920 in Vancouver BC. He is to be cremated and his ashes launched into orbit. Mr Doohan suffered from Alzheimer's and Pneumonia upon his death at age 85. Last year he was given a star on the walk of fame.

Egypt: el-Nashar an Innocent Lamb Wrongfully Accused

Magdy el-Nashar, the Leeds scholar who was arrested in Egypt following the London terror bombings, has been absolved of any wrongdoing by the Egyptian government. From The Guardian:

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Egypt said Tuesday that a detained chemist wanted by Britain for questioning about the London bombings had no links to the July 7 attacks or to al-Qaida.
Government spokesman Magdy Rady said in a statement that a Cabinet meeting Tuesday reviewed an Interior Ministry report that "made clear that there is no link between Egyptian chemist Magdy el-Nashar with al-Qaida or the (London) bombings."

So there.

Of course Egyptian officials offered no explanation for this inconvenient report from CNN:

(CNN) -- The explosive TATP was found in connection with the investigation of the London bombings, three knowledgeable sources have told CNN.
One of the sources said that investigators found the TATP in the Leeds apartment rented by Magdy el-Nashar, an Egyptian biochemist detained for questioning Thursday in connection with the London attacks.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation for these seemingly contradictory reports. After all, it's not as if the Egyptians have a history of lying about terrorist incidents or anything.

My first impression was that Flight 93 was shot down, a prudent action under the circumstances. This report was never repeated. It went into the 'memory hole'. Why has this been covered up? 12 Wanderin' Greg: Europe, for how "progressive" it is (not always a good thing), is still old-fashioned in many ways. I guess there " No Shorts" rule is an attempt to maintain some sort of dress code. Of course they wouldn't have dared throw "Papa" out! I'm not sure I would use the words "good fiction," though. It's misleading. Something that may be technically well-written is not enough for me to want to taint my mind with it. Supreme Court Nominee

The announcement has been made that President Bush will reveal his nominee for the Supreme Court at 9pm EDT. My thought is that whoever is selected to go before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a thorough grilling has to be presently puckered, knowing full well that every single wart will be discussed and debated. It will be a professional and personal beating.

That is, except for one person, Dick Cheney. He's the only person that probably needs a couple weeks to unpucker from his recent, reported globally in 30 minutes, proctological exam. It seems that he would be a logical choice since he's been immunized to the personally penetrating process.

So, if President Bush desires to minimize pain in the confirmation process, he'll nominate Dick Cheney. And, what fun there would be.

4 Personally I think the more of this crap they try before the election, the worse they will lose. They haven't stopped to think that by 2008, many, if not most, voters will get their news from blogs and e-zines, which are far more diverse and accountable due to peer review. The leftards have lost their media monopoly, yet they lack the capacity to change their tactics to reflect the new reality of the blogosphere, so they keep doing the same thing over and over, and continue to fail, over and over. (Isn't that the definition of stupidity, or is it insanity?) The result will be that people who might have been swayed by their lies before can now easily research scandalous claims and get to the truth, if that's what they're after, and I think most people who are not fanatical party members of the Kool-Aid Brigade are looking for truth.

6 John: The article you linked was written in October of 2003, which was after the committee report, which made available the details of Wilson's deblief. It's entirely accurate to say that Wilson's verbal debriefing (he didn't file a written report) bolstered the case for Iraq seeking uranium in Niger. But the administration knew nothing of Wilson's verbal "report," until the committee made it available, because it wasn't considered important enough to pass up the chain of command. Also note that in the article Wilson repeats his lie that his wife had nothing to do with posting him to Niger. He calls it "bullshit." We know, of course, that it wasn't. Simply put, Wilson was lying: i.e. representing something as true that he knew was false, as well as representing something as false that he knew was true. The remaining issue is whether Rove knowingly "outed" a cladestine agent, and as far as I can tell there is no determination yet that she was clandestine or that Rove knew it, if she was. Hence, if you'd have killed him you'd have been guilty of lynching someone based on zero actual evidence.

The Silence at West Point was not killing someone, it was literally not talking with the person, as if he didn't exist when they had been found for an honor violation but then refused to resign. We in the military try to live by the concept of Duty Honor and Country. The honor code was simple "a Cadet will not lie cheat or steal nor tolerate those that do" Wouldn't it be a nice country if our civilian leadership even attempted to live by an honor code.

Seems to have been given the boot over on the Counterterrorism Blog. And check out what Whalid Phares has to say about their recruitment practices. Straining out gnats and swallowing camels.) I'm afraid I don't follow what you're saying about an Honor Code Violation, though I attended a military academy so am aware of what an Honor Code is. Really, I don't know what you're driving at. Goes right over my head, apparently.

Baseball Coach Arrested on Beaning Allegations

(North Union Township, Pennsylvania) A local youth baseball coach was arrested and charged with bribing one of his boys to intentionally throw at an autistic player.

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Eric Forsythe, who heads the R.W. Clark Youth Baseball League in North Union Township, said he was shocked when Mark Downs Jr., 27, of Dunbar was charged last Friday with bribing player Keith Reese, 7, with $25 to hit teammate Harry Bowers Jr., 9, in the face with a baseball to keep him from playing.
When hitting Bowers in the ear with a ball didn't keep him off the field, he intentionally hit him in the groin with another throw, state police charged.

The boy went to an emergency room and was treated for swollen red marks on his ear and groin. Specific charges Downs faces include criminal solicitation to commit aggravated assault, corruption of minors, criminal conspiracy to commit simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

If the allegations prove true, Downs obviously doesn't possess the moral and ethical qualities suited for leading youngsters and it's beyond me what he could have been thinking.

(Tampa, Florida) We have fresh news regarding teacher Debra Lafave, the stunning 24-year-old who mixed it up with a 14-year-old student. At a hearing yesterday, it was announced that plea negotiations broke down and Lafave is scheduled to be tried in December. Her lawyer indicates that she will plead insanity.

All nations that have exported weaponry or materials - either sanctioned or not by their government - will be put on notice that to do so is to declare war on the US, and will immediately face the same travel and banking restrictions as Muslim nations, plus US embargoes. All mosques, beginning in Afghanistan and Iraq, must be disbanded until cells are shut down and teaching abandons jihad. To teach jihad outside the US will be an act of war. Mosques in the US will be warned that any questionable activity or teaching of jihad is treason, and they will also be shut down and prosecuted as non-uniformed combatants. Their accounts will be restricted with no off-shore transfers. Both our allies and others will be put on notice that if they do not comply, similar restrictions will be applied to them. Do I think this and a number of other effective, non-"nuke 'em" strategies will happen? No, probably not even in the event of a nuclear strike. People at home will have to lose the liberties they see "innocent Muslims" suffering before they will support such action, and politicians know it. For those of you who abhor my suggestions because of the police state they imply, you might want to think about whether you will outlive the next strike on US soil to experience an Islamic-imposed sharia state. 1 I think that this is extremely sad! Why is it that the people that do the worst things get out of prison? If he would have never been released four people would still be alive and a little girl wouldn't have to have nightmares for the rest of her life. This system is absolutely ridiculous!!! Poor Dylan...the last couple weeks of his life were being scared, molested, and then killed!!! The system needs to get their heads out of their butts and figure out what to do with all of these sick people. People that kill, rape and molest should get the same thing done to them. I'm sick of all of these people getting away with everything while all of these families suffer from what they've done. Yeah alot of them get life in prison because they think it's a way to make them suffer and think about what they did but what the system doesn't get is that at least half of them don't care especially the ones that get out and do it again. Among others I have a 35 ft all alumimum Cabo that is 13.5ft wide and we can pretty much go where we want. We are super powered with twos 350 volvo diesels. We are going 30 knots if only running one engine. Always looking for patiots to come down here and enjoy. No charge for boat and you can stay aboad. Many fine paartying places where we dock at the Harra's club in New orleans. We party all nignt and fish all day. Also swim in clear water.
